The Faculty of Engineering at the University of Calabar (UNICAL) has received a major boost as the National Universities Commission (NUC) has approved the establishment of two new departments, namely: the Department of Mechatronics Engineering and the Department of Petroleum and Gas Engineering.
This development is expected to widen the scope of the study for engineering students at UNICAL and attract more students to the Faculty.
The new departments will also offer opportunities for research and innovation in emerging areas of engineering, which are critical to the development of the nation.
According to the Vice Chancellor of UNICAL, Prof. Florence Banku Obi, the approval of the two new departments is a testament to the university’s commitment to providing quality education and training in engineering, in line with global best practices.
She further emphasized that the university management is committed to supporting the new departments with the necessary resources, facilities, and equipment needed to ensure that they meet the highest standards of excellence in teaching and research.
The Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Prof. Nsikak Idem, expressed his delight at the approval of the new departments, stating that they will create more opportunities for students and faculty members to explore new areas of engineering and contribute to the development of the nation.
This is indeed a laudable development for UNICAL’s Faculty of Engineering, as it further consolidates its position as a leading institution in engineering education and research in Nigeria.
The National Universities Commission (NUC) has granted full accreditation to all engineering courses offered by the University of Calabar (UNICAL).
